I can't find the link to provide, but Canada has a "no idling zone" webpage, and one of the studies they did was the amount of gas burned idling. If memory serves, their "average" car was a V6 that got something like 22-23MPG, and it burned around 1-cup of gas every 10 minutes (from memory, and that was converted from metric, so don't take my word as gospel!). You could do the algebra and figure something more precise, but I'm lazy, so I'd just halve the fuel consumption, and say 3 cups per hour, thus 72 cups burned in 24 hours, or approx 4.5 gallons. Again, this is a SWAG based on my faulty memory. Found the idling page, but not the specific report...but it is somewhere in here: http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/transportation/personal/idling.cfm?attr=0
