Need to power an electronic device that how operates from an AC adapter with an output of 5 volts and 200 milliamps. Looks like that is one watt total output. Want to power from an 12 volt auto battery without using an AC inverter. The idea is to use 12 volts as the input power source and convert to 5 volts 200 milliamps. Can't this easily be done with a zener diode using a zener diode with a 5 volt breakdown voltage to supply 5 volts DC at 200 milliamps? If so, please point out some sample circuits. It seems that cell phone car chargers would use a similar circuit because 12 volts DC is the input but my phone's battery is 3.8 volts.

go with the LM7805, that is what it is designed to do. the zener is much more complicated because it has to be designed to work over a range of 11.5 to 16.5 volts input from a car battery, a task the 7805 has no problem with. in order for the zener to function properly at 11.5 volts, it will have to dissipate 2 watts when the input goes up to 16.5 volts. you will need a 33 ohm limit resistor, and that will need to handle 4 watts minimum. So the zener circuit consumes 6 watts from the battery in order to regulate a 1 watt load. it operates at half the power conversion efficiency of the 7805 at best, and possibly much worse if the load is not 200 ma all the time. your phone has a smart charger built in and is for more complex than either a zener or a 7805.
