Existing sys is gas hot air with central a/c. The temp in my house stays pretty cool but the humidity rises before the temp making it uncomfortable. So, can I wire a humidistat in parallel with my existing thst to control humidity in the summer. I do not have a humidifier for winter, or will I need a separate transformer for the humidistat?. Do I connect the humidistat to "R" & "Y".....?

The answer is actually yes but It may not be the best thing to do. It sounds like your system is either over-sized and doesn't run long enough to remove humidity or you keep the thermostat set rather high. The problem with putting a humidistat in parallel with the cooling circuit is first you also have to energize the fan (G), and second, you may over-cool the house by doing this. Commercial systems do this but have reheat to compensate for over-cooling while dehumidifying. They cool and re-heat simultaneously to maintain both humidity and temperature. This is expensive. I would try is to reduce the fan speed on the air handler. It is probably on "high". Try setting it to "medium" or "medium-high". It is just a wire change, probably on a circuit board or speed tap block on the blower. I would not recommend low for cooling. It may be too low and cause freezing or related problems. The lower fan speed makes a cooler evaporator which in turn removes more moisture. Other than that, there is not much you can do besides a lot of expensive changes you wouldn't want. The higher end systems have combination temperature and humidity controls and special air handlers that vary the fan speed according to humidity levels. It sounds like your system just may be too big for the space. By the way, you wouldn't need another transformer to install the humidistat, but you would need to energize G also. No reason for another transformer. The humidistat uses no power if it is just a standard mechanical humidistat.
