LucyLucy asked I would like to buy a combination drill and screwdriver for small jobs around the house.?

What brand would be best? And what should I look for?

And got the following answer:

It should be cordless. It would be real nice if it was two-speed. You drill on high speed, and you drive screws on low speed (much more control). Two batteries instead of one would be nice also. That way when one runs down during a large job, you can just pop in the other one. They sell drills with two batteries if you look. The higher the voltage (12, 14.4, 18, 24), the better and the more expensive. 12 volt works alright. I think all the brands are pretty good. If you want to save some money, you can buy a reconditioned one from Skil. Here is the page with the 14.4 volt cordless screwdrivers. Some of them have stud finders, etc... The two-speed drill is $54. The one speed drill is $35. The website has tons of tools. Some are new and not reconditioned. The good thing about Skil is that it doesn't cost a lot. http://www.skilshop.com/reconditioned_tools/drills/14-4v_cordless_drills/ Home Depot always has a good deal. They sell a reconditioned Ryobi 18 volt 2-speed drill and flashlight combo for $75 (free shipping). It's online only, and they are usually out-of-stock. I guess you have to back order it. Ryobi is a good name. Makita is also a good name. I've known a few carpenters who would only use Makita. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100404353&N=10000003+90401+1688&marketID=401&locStoreNum=8125 Home Depot has 60 drills on their website: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Navigation?storeId=10051&keyword=cordless%20drill&langId=-1&catalogId=10053
