I recently asked the manufacturer of a "1000 Peak Amp Power Station w 500W Inverter" if it could potentially be used to power a small household sump pump for a limited time in the case of a power outage. I wondered how long would it last on a single charge. Their response was "Most sump pumps require more power than the power station can provide. Max power is 500 watts or 4 amps." does this sound right? I'm wondering if there is another way to supply backup power to a sump pump beside the usual battery backup, and all the cost and maintenance involved with that.

And got the following answer:

Check your sump pump to see how much power it draws. I have one that uses less than 500 watts, but it's only a 1/6 horsepower motor (it pumps up to 950 gallons per hour). You can, of course run a pump that uses less than 500 watts. Obviously, the lower the pump's wattage, the longer it will run on a given battery's full charge. You can also get battery-powered pumps, although they tend to be expensive.
