Alchol boils at 180F degrees compared to water boiling at 212F. Gently heating the Mash to just over 180F will cause just the alcohol to boil off leaving the water behind. The alcohol vapor is collected as it boils off and is passed through copper tubing which allows the hot vapor to cool and condense back into a liquid. Reasons why it may not be working. 1.) Your mash doesn't have alcohol in it . Try using a known mash receipe like using yeast and corn meal before trying experimental mash. 2.) try an experimental distillation using a mixture of water and some of "Dad's" cheap Booze (vodka) Add a couple of shots to the water in the kettle. See if you can get this control mixture to distill out of the water mix. THis will validate your still setup and once you know it is working you can concentrate on the MASH mixture. 3.) The vapors being produced are at a low pressure. THey may be escaping through a leak OR they are being blocked. Condensate that forms in the copper tubing must be allowed to drain freely without building up in the tubing. If allowed to build up it can form a vapor trap (just like a sink trap) then pressure must build up to push the condensate out. Increasing pressure in the tubing to can cause small leaks to become larger as the vapors see an easier way to escape.. If this isn't done then air can be drawn in and no vacuum will be formed. This is another efficiency thing as it hleps prevent loss of uncondensed vapors and allows alcohol to be extracted fast at a slightly lower temperature.
