iceman5798 asked How to go from a 12v battery to a dc power outlet?

I'm trying to get some electric in a camper but the main wiring is shot so I'm setting up a solar panel on the roof and putting a car battery inside it but I don't know how to go from the 12v battery to a dc power outlet so I can then hook up a dc/AC power inverter and be able to plug stuff in

And got the following answer:

You would not normally use a DC outlet for an inverter, except a tiny one. Besides, there is no common standard for DC outlets apart from car cigarette lighters and those can't take much current. Connect the battery to the inverter with good-sized cable (sized per the inverter specs) through a cutoff switch (again, sized per the inverter specs). Use an RV deep-discharge battery not a car battery. You are not going to be able to run much from a single battery for very long (yes you can run a circular saw or vacuum cleaner from a 1000W inverter, but only for a few minutes). You are better off with 12V LED lamps and 12V laptop adapters than running 120V appliances. You might want to run some charging circuit with a diode inline to charge the RV battery from the truck (or a disconnect switch or other way to prevent the truck battery discharging when the engine's off), unless you have a good-sized panel that can actually supply all your electric needs.
